Charting A Career In The Smart Grid Sector
A smart grid transfers electricity from the suppliers to individual consumer homes and offices by the use of a two way technology
. This controls the various appliances at the homes of consumers in order to save energy and also reduces consumption cost. It also increases the transparency and reliability of the whole process of mapping the consumption. Smart grids are being promoted by several states as they can go a long way in asserting energy independence. The smart grid is enabled by the use of the application of sensors, control and measurement devices that make this two way communication possible.
Equipped with superconductive transmission lines, these systems control the loss of power to a large extent. Electricity generated from renewable sources of energy such as wind and solar is integrated into the smart grid.
Smart grid jobs revolve around the creation, installation, maintenance and repair of such complex systems.
A smart grid is an integrated system. In other words, it is an aggregate of several networks, operators and power generation companies that are structured at various levels. The transmission networks transfer electricity over moderate to long distances from 345kV to 800kV that are transferred through AC and DC networks. The local networks operate by transferring power in one direction thereby distributing the same through lines that operate at 132kV and below.
The smart grid is responsible for delivering electricity from various points of generation to the homes of the consumers and the network functions primarily through two systems namely the transmission and the distribution system. The transmission system transfers the electricity from power plants to the distribution substations while the latter transfers it to the home of the consumers.
This technology has been used to empower electric vehicles as well. It is expected that by the end of 2014, there will be as many as 30 different models of electric vehicles that would hit the UK roads. The inventory is likely to include motor bikes, sports cars, passenger cars, and commercial vehicles as well. The electric vehicles can be used to remotely programme the electric vehicle to cool, heat and even charge with the help of your smart phone. This employs the use of latest technology which is devised after substantial research and development. These are categorised as
smart electric vehicle jobs .
The demand for workers who can be employed at all levels of the sector is huge, right from consultancy to supply chain to that of the energy companies as well. Employment growth is visible in all aspects such as operations, manufacturing, maintenance and research and development. The scope and demand for these jobs will naturally increase when there are further investments in the sector. People who hail from a commercial or management background are in charge of looking after the development of the green projects, the implementation of cutting edge technologies right from wind turbines to smart grid software.
Skilled workers with relevant experience in engineering and grid connections, high value capital projects and heavy industry are required for the operations, construction and maintenance projects.
