Locality and History
Liverpool is situated on the north-west coast of England in the county of Lancashire. It sits on the estuary of the River Mersey thus taking the name Merseyside; people coming from the city are generally known as Scousers named after a local stew dish known as Scouse. Liverpool grew as a major city because of its busy port and dockland area; this was due to its trading links with the West Indies, Ireland and Europe. However there is far more to Liverpool than these four, a few of which are mentioned below.
The Beatles Story there is nothing to say about these 4 Liverpool lads who created such a phenomenon in the 60s that has not been said before. This exhibition can be found at the Albert Dock. It is a full tribute to the life and times of the Fab Four and has recently expanded into another Waterfront location the Pier Head.
The Cavern Club continues the story of the Beatles with a visit to the club where it all started for them. From the club you can go on the Magical Mystery Tour coach trip which will take you to all the spots made famous by the Beatles.
Royal Liver Building probably the most famous building in Liverpool; if it is not then it must come a close second to the home of Liverpool Football Club, Anfield. The two famous statues of the Liver Birds sit on top of this building and they later gave their names to a situation comedy based on 2 female flatmates The Liver Birds.
Liverpool Cathedral or the Cathedral Church of Christ in Liverpool to give it its correct name. It is the fifth largest Cathedral in the world and the largest in Britain, with the longest nave of any cathedral in the world.
Mathew Street Music Festival is an annual festival held in August using 6 stages and incorporating a fringe festival at more than 40 indoor venues.
John Smiths Grand National surely there is no one out there who has not heard of the Grand National, one of the most bet upon horse races in the world. It takes place on Liverpools famous Aintree Race course every April.
British Musical Fireworks Championships takes place in September and is exactly what it says on the tin, seven competitors set their fireworks off synchronised to music.
If you were going to visit Liverpool and see all the sites you would probably have to book a room for several weeks but hopefully this gives you a flavour of what is available.
