. I fondly remember reading any and all science based material that I could get my hands on when I was young. Of particular interest to me was the field of chemistry. Watching the liquids boil, change color and foam always captured my interest even if I had no clue as to what was really going on at that point. Still, my interest did not waiver and eventually, I actually pursued a career as an industrial chemist after I grew up.

If you think you have a future little scientist running around, then you can explore that option and do two things. First, you can encourage interest in a subject and field that is very important in society and has a need. Secondly, if there is indeed interest, you would be giving them an advantage over others who are also interested in this field and you will be setting them up to excel.

A good chemistry lab set for home use would have a variety of items including but not limited to: a mass balance for measureing out reactants, beakers for preparing solutions and dissolving solutes, flasks for preparing solutions and dissolving solutes, crucibles for facilitating oxidation reactions as well as for dehydration, weigh boats for weighing out reactants, glass stirring rods for stirring solutions and solutes in solvents, a small gas-powered burner for heating liquids to name a few.

Additionally, you would have some basic safety equipment to protect your eyes, skin and respiratory system. Safety goggles are important because they help protect your eyes from potential spillsn and spashes and they are very inexpensive. Chemical resistant gloves are great for protecting the skin on your hands from irritating chemicals. Furthermore, a lab coat will help prevent you skin and clothes from splashes or spills that may occur. And, finally, an appropriate respirator will help protect your lungs from potentially irritating fumes.
