Chicago Toyota Prius May Have Future Toyota Hybrid Competition

As if the success of Prius is not enough, Toyota just keeps going with its ideas and designs for new hybrid vehicles

. The latest on the drawing board is the concept FT-CH, which was unveiled no long ago in Detroit at the North America International Auto Show.

Chicago Toyota Prius customers will be glad to know that this is not just a derivative of the Prius its smaller by about 22 inches, lighter in weight and, get this, it will cost less. Now despite its smaller size, the design firm in Nice, France who makes sure Toyota vehicles are all that assures us that it is roomy inside and provides maximum comfort for the passengers.

Since Toyota announced it would produce eight new hybrid vehicles by 2015, whether battery electric, plug-in or hydrogen fuel cell, the company has seriously committed itself to designing vehicles that use non-renewable fuels. Toyota President Jim Lentz says this is an important step, as oil will likely peak in the next 20 years maximum, and any type of liquid fuel will have shortages.

Customers curious about the FT-CH will need to be patient, though. You wont find it before next spring. But since Lentz claims it is a package customers and dealers have requested, your Chicago used Toyota dealer will have the scoop long before the FT-CH goes on sale.

Another difference in the FT-CH and the Prius is the customer base it will be marketed to. The Prius is considered a family car, but has wide appeal to the single, eco-conscious crowd. The FT-CH, which will hopefully be given a name we can pronounce before its release, will be aimed more at a younger crowd. Because of its smaller size, making it more maneuverable, city dwellers and college students may find this the green car for them.

In fact, Toyota has even said this design is meant to appeal to the colorful, energetic 8-bit generation, which apparently, unbeknownst to some of us in the over-40 crowd, has become a sub-culture based on those classic video games we played as kids in the 80s. The name derives from the 8-bit micro-processing chip and the retro style even has its own music and art. Go figure. But then, we always knew the 80s had the best music!

But Chicago Toyota Prius dealers will probably have some Prius customers who like the retro look of the FT-CH. Perhaps they can be sold on it as their weekend car or a nostalgia fix.

Chicago used Toyota dealers will be glad to have a defined new group of customers to target and the environmentally correct hybridness of the FT-CH will certainly be attractive to the 8-bit group.
