Chinese New Year or the Lunar New Year is also called the Spring Festival

. It is the longest and most important festival in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Commencing on the very first day of the Chinese calendar these festivities are carried out till the 15th of the same month.

Although this celebration originated centuries ago, countless people both local and foreign eagerly await this magical time of the year. Marked as a significant day according to the Chinese calendar, this celebration is known for its colorful aspect. The rituals and traditions observed by those who celebrate this occasion entail the very essence of the festival and Chinese culture.

Chinese New Year celebrations occur all around the world at this time of the year. As most populated countries have a strong Chinese community, this occasion touches the lives of millions across the globe. Similar to almost every major festival in Chinese culture, the Chinese New Year is a very vibrant affair which involves people from all age groups and energy levels.

Within China, customs and traditions related to this celebration vary widely. People pour their money out to buy gifts, decorations, goods, food, and clothing. It is also customary for every family to clean their house thoroughly to sweep away any ill-fortune. This is done with the hope of making way for good luck. Entire houses are at times garnered in red decorative material as this is the colour which represents prosperity in ancient Chinese culture along with happiness, wealth, and longevity. On the Eve of Chinese New Year, the supper is considered a family feast. A variety of mouthwatering delicacies are prepared and consumed in restaurants and households around Tianjin during the New Year. After the feast, the night comes to an end with firecrackers. Early next morning, children greet their parents wishing them a new year filled with health and happiness. In turn they receive money in red paper envelopes.
