Arthritis defines a group of diseases that affect the joints

. There are actually over 100 different types of arthritis recognized by the medical establishment. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease of the joints, and Rheumatoid Arthritis, an autoimmune disease that affects the joints are the most commonly mentioned.

Pain is the most common symptom of arthritis, in any of its forms. Inflammation and deformity, most commonly seen in the hands, are symptoms of more advanced forms of the condition.

Early Disease Management Differs -

During early stages of osteoarthritis, pain management is the primary goal of treatment. Generally a disease of the elderly, it is possible to develop the disease even in childhood. As degeneration occurs at the joint sites, bones begin to rub one against the other, causing discomfort.

With rheumatoid arthritis the goal is to contain the autoimmune response as effectively as possible. The disease most commonly presents itself in the mid-twenties, and is progressive. Aggressive treatment geared at controlling the immune response can help patients lead a full and normal life.

Management Methods -

1.Exercise. Exercise does many things for those with arthritis. The movement helps bring nutrients to the joints and removes waste products; this helps keep the joints healthy. Range-of-motion exercises in particular are geared towards helping maintain full movement within the joint. As the disease progresses many arthritis patients who don't exercise find their movement compromised.

2.Medication. Medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen help control the pain and some of the swelling associated with the condition. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) are also commonly prescribed. With rheumatoid arthritis various immune suppressing medications are offered, as are corticosteroids.

3.Knee injections. When arthritis affects the knees then there are certain substances that can be injected into the knee to increase the space between the bones. Hyaluronic acid is the most common choice for injections and is placed over a series of injections. The acid temporarily improves the thickness of natural synovial fluid and can help reduce pain in the joint.

4.Supplementation. There are some studies that indicate that using glucosamine and chondroitin may help may relieve the symptoms and stiffness associated with arthritis. Fish oils have some anti-inflammatory benefits and may help as well.

5.Surgery. Surgical options are considered among the final efforts doctors will perform to control pain. There are a number of surgeries including fusion, rebuilding, partial and complete replacements and more. Each surgical procedure addresses a different aspect of arthritis damage, it is best to consult your physician regarding such options.

Unfortunately, treatment is somewhat limited to managing the symptoms and, when appropriate, surgical procedures. Although a great deal of research is being done on the causes of arthritis, there is also a genetic component to many cases.

Factors that can lead to arthritis include excessive weight, genetics, joint injuries, repetitive use of a joint, a nerve injury or aging. Where you can control a few of the damaging factors, others are beyond individual management. If you suspect that you have arthritis, talk to your doctor; an effective treatment plan will certainly improve your quality of life.
