The latest research in lower back pain indicates that many back pain patients are receiving improper care

. Researchers at The Spine Journal suggest creating a three-tiered system to help patients with acute or chronic back pain receive the right education and treatment options. Too many people with less severe back pain are being sent for aggressive treatments that may make their problems worse.

Recent spikes in the number of fusion surgeries and spinal decompression procedures (see the July issue of Anesthesiology News) are putting medical officials on watch for what may be an over-diagnosis and over-treatment trend. The new system suggested by The Spine Journal would place every back pain sufferer into one of a few categories, including "acute" pain sufferers all the way up to the most grave sufferers, chronic back pain patients with neurological involvement.

For each level of severity, there are intervention suggestions, so that an acute back pain patient may be given education materials in diet and stretching along with a handful of ibuprofen meanwhile a chronic pain patient may require a prescription for a narcotic medication and a tailored exercise plan. According to this plan, more interventions like surgery or even spinal decompression should be far more rare than they are.

In the middle of this attempt to re-evaluate back pain control as a condition treatable without intervention, the journal of Musculoskeletal Disorders this month released another study verifying the ability of spinal decompression to reduce back pain and restore disc height. While the researchers at The Spine Journal want doctors to treat lower back pain with kind words and medication, those conducting research on procedures that decompress the spine without invasive surgery are telling us, once again, that their procedures work.

Herniated and bulging discs in the spine cause millions of people pain on a daily basis. Spinal decompression is just one of a list of back surgery alternatives that includes spinal traction and chiropractic manipulation. The big difference between the three interventions on that list? Time and again, medical researchers confirm that decompression works. For many pain patients, it is no surprise that many doctors would rather treat the symptoms of back pain instead of staging an intervention to relieve them long-term. As long as decompression of the spine is available in America it will remain one of the most tested and recommended back pain relief methods.
