Choose The Right Spot For Camping
The place where you choose to camp can have a big effect on how much you enjoy your camping
. It may be a busy campsite with plenty of facilities not too far from civilization, or it could even be on a remote mountain miles from anywhere. Unless you are an experienced camper, it would be a good idea not to choose a camp site too far from civilization.
For people with a bit of camping experience, it is hard to beat the enjoyment you get from wild camping. If you are new to camping you will probably be better off starting at a commercial campsite with facilities such as showers and toilets.
If camping at a commercial campsite they will probably find the best spot for you to pitch your tent. Then you won't have to worry about where to put the tent. Many other campsites will leave you to choose your own place to pitch your tent, and you should choose carefully in order to get the right spot. Ensure that you do not site your tent anywhere near other tents, this can be dangerous in the event of fire and can cause the fire to spread more rapidly. Keeping a distance of about six paces between tents will be a safe enough distance.
Avoid pitching your tent on any low ground on the site has this is the most likely area to flood in heavy rain. Don't pitch your tent underneath trees, it can be dangerous in the event of a thunder storm or windy conditions and you may get tree sap falling on to your tent. Tree sap can leave a sticky mess on your tent, and drops of water will fall on your tent for some time after the rain has finished.
If conditions are going to be windy it is best to site your tent somewhere sheltered, e.g. close to a wall. The wall will divert the wind and help to keep your tent safe and secure.
In hot weather you should try to find a shady part of the campsite as the inside of some tents can get very hot during sunny spells. Having some shade can really make a difference to the temperature inside the tent and make things a lot more comfortable.
If you aren't bringing your own toilet you will probably want to be not too far from the toilet block. You probably do not want to pitch your tent too close as you may end up with a large number of people passing your tent both day and night. If the campsite has a play area for children it can be useful for parents of young children to pitch near to the play area so that they can supervise their children. However, if you do not like the sound of children playing noisily you should avoid pitching near the play area.
