Choosing a college heavily depends on the college major the student wants to choose; however

, it often happens that the individual starts to choose a college without having any specific major preferences. This situation adds some challenges to the college choice because most colleges initially offer the major specialization or provide additional opportunities in choosing two majors, a major and a minor etc. So, what should students do in cases when the do not possess any particular preferences and have not decided anything about the future profession? How should they choose the most suitable colleges? The present article is dedicated to the described dilemma and aims at giving some pieces of advice for undecided students.

Choosing a College Major When Should This Be Done?

1. The time when the ultimate choice of a college major should be done depends on the period of college studies; if the individual takes a two-year course, then it is essential to choose the major at once. In cases when the four-year course is offered, students may make their choice upon the completion of the sophomore year. Thus, they have two years for their choice.

2. In case the four-year program is more preferable, the student does not have to make his or her choice before enrollment. He/she may choose some subjects interesting for him/her, and attend general courses for two years to choose the most appealing ones. It is better to choose colleges with two majors as they will give more flexibility in employment further on.

3. When the two-year program is more preferable, the individual should conduct research in the field of subjects offered by the college, read students feedback about the studies at the colleges forum and consult the school counselor about his/her academic profile. It will help assess chances for success in various subjects and make the final decision.
