Choosing Adoption Can Be A Mother's Selfless Act

Having a child can be a joyous event but it can sometimes be a stressful and sad time also

. There is no shame or embarrassment like being made to feel that having a child is wrong or a cause for self-recrimination. No mother should feel that way. It is easy in today's voyeuristic society for a pregnant woman to feel as if everyone is watching her and judging her actions. Adoption agencies offer a good alternative for a woman who wishes to remain pregnant and give birth to her child but would have difficulty providing a good home for her child. With this option, a pregnant woman can make someone's dream come true. It's not often that a person has the opportunity to provide that for another person. It is extremely brave of women who choose adoption because a part of them is given away in the process.

In times past, adoption agencies may have been viewed as places that served adoptive parents more than birth mothers. However, the culture has changed in the last twenty years. Adoptions today are transformed from the isolated transactions that epitomized the adoption industry many years ago. With open and less stringent restraints on the relationship between birth mothers and adoptive families, adoptive children can know two realities, their adoptive families and the people who gave them life.

Over time, the process has become streamlined and efficient, which may make the birth mother's decision slightly easier. Adoption agencies match mothers with families that will be a good match for the child and will honor the mother's decision as well as her plans for the future. Some birth mothers do not wish to see their children after the adoption. This is understandable for anyone who has held a tiny newborn in her arms. The bond is almost immediate and heart-rending.

To see a child with another family is too much for some birth mothers and adoption agencies are respectful of the decision to sever ties with the child for a time. Realistically, many adoptive families feel comfortable with this arrangement also. But there are those who would like to be part of their children's lives, seeing pictures and getting updates about the children as they grow. In some cases the birth mother actually interacts with her child and is able to see her child on an intermittent basis.

This can be a very rewarding relationship for the mother, adoptive family and, most importantly, the child. In this instance, a child is able to have a relationship with his or her birth mother and also feel the love, support, and understanding of the adoptive family. This may reduce some of the feelings that naturally occur with a child who is adopted, such as wondering who the woman was and why she made the choice for adoption.

No longer is adoption viewed as a secretive manner of handling a difficult situation. It is a choice that many women make with intelligence, wisdom, and compassion for a child who, they know, deserves a life that she cannot provide.

Even though it is an extremely difficult decision, the changes that have occurred in society have made it easier for woman to choose adoption. Much of the stigma has been removed and the relationship between a birth mother and her child is not always stymied by strict rules against contact and communication. These few simple changes have made adoption a renewed resource for birth mothers seeking options for their children.
