Choosing Riding Gear And Clothes: A Beginners Guide

You've found the local stables, you've chosen your instructor and you've booked your

first lesson! So now all you have to is work out what to wear! This can be a daunting process, there is are so many clothes and so much equipment involved in riding it can be hard to know where to being. You don't want to rush out and buy everything all at once especially if you are a true beginner you should have a couple of lesson before you make big financial commitments.

No riding school will expect a beginner to turn up to their very first lesson with complete riding kit and they will (usually) have plenty of essentials that can borrow - the most important of these is a helmet, you can check with your instructor beforehand that they have helmets available but ALL good riding schools will. If they don't - I would re-consider your choice of school very carefully.

However whilst you don't need to have the complete riding gear for your first lesson wearing the wrong clothes to go riding can make the whole experience uncomfortable and harder than it needs to be. So choosing good quality riding gear is a great investment once you know that are going to be a regular rider.

One of the most important rules for riding clothes is functionality combined with style - a rider needs clothes that will allow easy movement and make for a more comfortable experience whilst looking elegant. Fabrics needs to be durable and light - as every rider will find out early on riding is a full work out and so you want riding clothes that is remains cool and will absorb moisture.

What compromises a riding outfit depends on what discipline you are doing - but for everyday riding you will need:

1.Riding Hat

2.Riding Boots / Jodhpur Boots

3.Breeches / Jodhpurs

4.Jacket

5.Riding Gloves

Riding clothes have come along and there are now a variety of styles and cuts to suit any shape and any budget so do your research and find out what brands are best for your needs. Find a tack shop or online equestrian shop with a good selection of brands and keep your eyes out for any bargains they may have - a good tip is to think ahead and buy out of season and then you can often get real bargains!
