Going ahead, one of the most important parameters for measuring the quality of a B-school is the Number of Applications Received for the Available Seats.

In the IIM league, IIM Indore received 2,38,432 applications from CAT test takers for admissions to the 235 seats of the full time PGP course (2009-10), which means that there were 1,014 candidates in the race for 1 seat.

IIM Calcutta had received the highest number of applications from CAT test takers, which was 2,46,546. The number of available seats for 2009-10 admissions was 285, which means that 865 aspirants competed for 1 seat of the B-schools full time PGP course. IIM Kozhikode had an Applicants-Seat ratio of 950. IIM Ahmedabad had an Applicants-Seat ratio of 843.

The Non-IIM B-schools

Amongst the non-IIM B-schools the most competitive and popular B-schools last year were XLRI Jamshedpur, FMS Delhi, IIFT Delhi, MDI Gurgaon and NMIMS Mumbai.

XLRI, which considers XAT scores, had received 102329 applications for admissions 2009-10 for the 180 seats. This means that there were 568 applicants for 1 seat of their full time MBA programme.

FMS Delhi, which conducts its own entrance exam, had received 75,000 applications for its 109 seats, which means that there were 688 applicants for one single seat of the MBA (FT) programme.

IIFT Delhi, which also conducts its own entrance exam, had received 48,000 applications for its 164 seats, which means that there were 292 applicants for one single seat of their full time MBA (IB) programme.

MDI Gurgaon, which considers CAT scores, had received 25,052 applications for its 231 seats, which means that there were 108 applicants for one seat of their full time MBA programme.

NMIMS Mumbai, which conducts its own entrance exam, had received 43,300 applications for its 250 seats, which means that there 173 applicants for each seat.

All these facts and figures will help you plan better for the post exam results rounds of these popular B-schools.
