In fact, it's not even restricted to just serving drinks and listening to patrons who just got divorced talking about their problems. As a bartender, you have many jobs, and you need to make sure that you're cut out for each and every one of them. Here are a few things to consider before you enroll...

Have You Ever Been a Designated Driver?

The bartender should be the most responsible and mature person at the club. Even if you have a bouncer at the bar, your job is to be the referee. You're the one who cuts someone off when they start getting unruly, you're the one who tells guys to "take it outside!" when they have an argument about one of them looking at the other's girl, and you're the one that calls a cab or tells someone where they can throw up if they've had a few too many. If you don't like the idea of playing babysitter to some unruly characters from time to time, you should consider catering as an alternative.

Are You a Safe Drinker?

You're not going to be doing much drinking on the job, but, there will be occasions where you're asked to take a shot with a table. You need to be someone who can do this responsibly, who can take one shot, and then wash your shot glass out. If you can't seem to take a sip out of a bottle of Jack Daniels without finishing the whole thing, then you probably shouldn't put yourself into a situation where you're surrounded by alcohol all day. Few bars expect you to never take a single drink under any circumstance, but no bars want to hire a lush.

Ever Worked the Line?

If you ever watch those cooking shows where a bunch of culinary academy graduates compete to see who gets to run a top kitchen, you'll see that most of them tend to crack under the pressure of cooking in a professional environment. This is because, for all their academic experience, they've never worked on a real line in a kitchen, so they have no idea how to react when people want those dishes in minutes flat. If you've never worked the line, get a part time job at a fast food joint for a little while. If you can't turn over a burger in seconds flat, you probably can't handle the pressure of bartending, either.
