Choosing a Phlebotomy School
Choosing a phlebotomy school is the first step towards a new career as a phlebotomist, and it is one of the most important. The school you attend will determine what kind of education and training you get and may be a huge deciding factor in whether you get hired by certain employers or not. And besides the prestige and quality of the school, there are many other factors to consider such as the cost of tuition, the potential financial aid you will receive and the flexibility of classes. You may need to consider whether they provide childcare.
If you have a few schools in mind it is important to first make sure that any school you are considering is accredited if it is not, employers may question the legitimacy of your education, and your credits may not transfer to other schools if you should relocate. The next step is to speak to a counselor or admissions officer about factors such as the career outlook for phlebotomists, financial aid, semester start dates, availability of classes, flexibility of classes and career resources after you graduate. Then you can decide whether any of the schools on your list would even be a good option for you.
Once you have narrowed your search then you can actually visit the campuses and see how they feel. It may be a good idea to talk to students and see what they have to say about the quality of their educations and what their career goals are to see if they link up with what you have in mind. Current and/or former students are usually glad to answer any questions that prospective students may have. Some other factors that you need to consider include the proximity of the campus to where you will be living and the prestige of the school, which may have to do with how long they've been open and what other types of courses they offer.
There are traditional colleges, community colleges, vocational schools and technical schools that offer phlebotomy programs. Choosing a phlebotomy school should not be too hard, but it's important to take the time and do it right.
