Choosing and Finding an Antique Or Retro Aluminum Christmas Tree
Choosing and Finding an Antique Or Retro Aluminum Christmas Tree
I love the retro look of aluminum trees, especially ones with the color wheel which rotates through multiple colors that shine on the tree, often red, green, and amber. These trees were first introduced in 1959 and were very popular during the 1960s. My grandparents had one, and it looked so modernistic, so space age, that my sister and I fell in love with it.
My grandparents loved it for the look and other reasons too. It didn't shed, or need watering, and they didn't need to buy a new one every year, transport it somehow in their car, and then dispose of it after Christmas. In other words, it was very convenient, of course something that I didn't care about as a kid!
These trees have come back into vogue and you can find both new ones and authentic antique ones for sale. I wish I still had my grandparent's, but it is long gone to who knows where.
They were and still are available in many colors although silver has always been most popular. Other colors include red, green, gold, amber, and some colors only available in modern trees like black. New "retro" style ones are available everywhere, but you need to do some looking for an antique one.
For an antique, it's best to look early, especially off season when prices are far less. Yard sales, Craigslist, and antique stores might have them. Online malls and auction sites will always have a few, but make sure you examine pictures as their look as well as condition can vary widely.
Evergleam, Krystal, Revlis, Silver Pine, and Warren are all brands that you may encounter in your search. The looks range for several reasons including that some may have as few as 24 branches, while some have well over 200 branches! Quite a range indeed. It's most common to find silver colored antiques and in fact other colors are quire rare and may command a premium at times. Sometimes the tree trunks will specify that they are painted. For whatever reason, often times the branches on an antique will be fine but the trunk will look poor and hence be painted. Most were constructed by wrapping aluminum on a strong supporting framework, usually steel wire and rod. This aluminum was glued on, and as the glue may have failed over the years sometimes the aluminum is "taped" on as a repair. These trees usually look great and the tape is not visible when assembled.
