Choosing luxury towels
From drying our hands after using the bathroom to keeping warm and getting dry after a bath or shower, towels play a surprisingly important part in our lives. The value of luxury towels is often underestimated, however, with many people happy to use low quality or old ones instead. It is telling that when we go away to a luxury hotel, one of the first things we notice is the quality of the towels. By choosing the right combination of fabric, thickness, softness and size, there's no reason why that luxury can't be available in your home every day.
Household towels in Europe and North America most commonly come in just four main varieties. These are, from smallest to largest, face cloths, hand towels, bath towels and bath sheets. Face cloths are small and, as their name suggests, they are most often used as flannels for washing the face. Hand towels are somewhat larger and are usually used for drying hands after using the washbasin.
Bath towels are larger again and are mainly used for drying the whole body after a shower or bath and sometimes for wrapping around the head to help wet hair dry and prevent water from dripping on to the body. Although they are quite large, they often do not fully wrap around the body and don't provide the sensation of being wrapped up after washing. For this, a bath sheet is ideal. These are by far the largest of the four types of towels and are ideal for staying warm after a shower and getting dry quickly.
After deciding what type of towel you need, you will next need to choose what material it is made from. At the lower end of the market are cheaper cotton-polyester towels. These are made from a mixture of natural and artificial fabrics and tend to be less absorbent and often wear out more quickly but they are practical and affordable.
Pure cotton towels tend to be more absorbent but are correspondingly more expensive. At the upper end of the scale are towels made from Egyptian cotton or Supima cotton and those woven with silk, which provide the best balance between comfort and absorbency, albeit at much higher prices than less luxurious towels. Higher quality towels, as well as being more absorbent, tend to be thicker and softer although this varies significantly from fabric to fabric and manufacturer to manufacturer.
The final consideration when choosing luxury towels should be colour. Opt for something that complements the colour scheme in your bathroom or that suits the personality and lifestyle of the person who is going to use them. If you are buying for a student, it might be better to buy darker coloured towels that don't require a regular white wash, for example. If you are buying for yourself, choosing a warm colour can greatly add to the sense of luxury and warmth that your towel provides.
