Choosing the Right Window Shutters

There are a number of considerations you will need to make when choosing the right window shutters for your home. Window shutters can enhance the style of both period and modern properties and there are a number of options available which will suit different budgets and design requirements.

Shutters for Privacy

If you live in a busy built up area then privacy will be an issue and a good option for window treatments is plantation window shutters. These offer slats that can be tilted at an angle to provide light and ventilation, so you can keep your shutters closed and still get light and air into your room. Caf style plantation shutter are also a good choice as these cover just the bottom half of the window and offer privacy and plenty of light for your rooms.

Shutter Colours

Window shutters can be manufactured in a number of different colours and you will have to decide if you want them to blend in with the building or to stand out as a bright, bold statement. If you have a period property then it can be more effective to opt for a traditional style window shutter in shades of white or in a traditional wood effect. If you have a modern property you may want to brighten up the look of your property with window shutters finished in bold colours to create a real wow' factor.

How Many Shutter Panels?

Window shutters can be designed with different panel numbers. As a general rule narrow panels which can fold back in a concertina effect are more practical for rooms that get used regularly as they can easy be opened and folded away neatly to project less intrusively into the room. These concertina style solid shutters can be more expensive than other types of shutters, so for rooms that are not used that often you can opt for a more traditional single panel shutter as space will not be so much of an issue.

Shutter Materials

Once you have decided on the style of shutter you would like for your home then it is time to choose the material. Red Western Cedar is very popular as this wood contains its own natural preservation which makes is very resistant to rot, insects and weather damage. Red western cedar is also lightweight, strong, durable and resistant to warping and has a beautiful natural finish.
