Chunk It Down When Starting A New Business
If you are one of those people who want to start a business or who have already started
a new business, then you will most definitely have suffered from a sense of overwhelm. This in itself is not a bad thing but it can leave you feeling paralysed.
So where exactly should you start in any business, project, role or job. With so many good willed people offering every small business tip under the sun, it can be a challenge.
Start with the end in mind. Visualise where you want to be and work backwards.
If you start your project with a clear idea of what you want from it or even a business for that matter and then begin the process of working backwards, its probably the easiest way.
Lets take an example of a small business owner starting out full of good intentions.
Question 1 Can you describe what you want your business to look like in 5 years time. Allow yourself to think big, to dream etc.
Question 2 Can you describe what your business will look like in 3 years from now i.e turnover, team, your role, main line of business.
Questions 3 Can you describe what your business will look like in one years time i.e Turnover, Team, Customers, Type of work being done.
Question 4 Can you describe how your business will look in 6 months time I.E turnover, team, Type of client exc.
At each point we do not lose focus on what we want in 5 years and in order to achieve our 5 year plan we must start off on a trajectory that will get us to our 5 year goal. Our 6 Month Goal is far more realistic and achievable and it is easier to determine what we need to do to get started.
The topic of the chapter is Chunk it Down By breaking your 5 year goal down into more specific and time oriented pieces, we begin to see the possibilities and start to understand the activities that we need to do each day.
For example, in our business, we are challenged to get in front of 5 prospective clients every week for the first year. Should be easy we have nothing else to do. Yet many people struggle with this and start to make excuses. Any person in our business who met 5 prospective business owners per week was ultimately successful. Some choose to do something else.
Another example would be in our online business. We are challenged to generate 30+ leads per day. Should again be easy - the internet has a huge audience. Yet again some people start to make excuses. Any person generating the right number of leads per day will be successful with our system. Some chose to do this and are successful whilst others chose something else.
