Cinema Inspired Oil And Gas Industry Innovations

According to the movies, money and greed have always been a well-known factor in the oil industry

, as was displayed in the 2007 film "There Will Be Blood." Daniel Day Lewis's character, Daniel Plainview, is a money-hungry, miner turned oil-man, who lies, cheats and kills to achieve his quest of wealth.

In the film, Plainview is able to drain oil from underneath the land of neighboring properties, without them knowing. He is able to do this through, drainage. The drainage is brought on by "directional drilling."

Directional drilling has been an accepted procedure of oil drilling since the early 1920's. Directional drilling features a significant number of advantages, such as drilling into reservoirs at angles that can't be reached by vertical drilling, having more wellheads grouped together per surface location. This allows for a more cost-efficient way to produce wells. Also notable is the ability to relieve pressure of a well producing without restraint, and producing a larger exposure in the reservoir due to drilling at an angle. With

At the conclusion of the film, "There Will Be Blood" did a great job explaining directional drilling in its simplest language. A noticeably drunk Daniel Plainview is approached by Eli regarding his old drilling fields. Plainview then goes onto explain how he drained the oil from that property. "Here, if you have a milkshake, and I have a milkshake, and I have a straw. There it is, that's a straw, you see? You watching? And my straw reaches across the room, and starts to drink your milkshake. I drink your milkshake." The drainage that Plainview speaks of is brought on by the directional drilling that he had established on all of the surrounding properties.

This proved to be a prime example of use within the oil industry, which dated back as far as the early 20th century, where extracting oil with permission and in accordance with rules and regulations has been carefully and honestly practiced.

Today, directional drilling has evolved into deep sea drilling, which is the latest frontier of oil industries. By using pipelines, oil can be extracted safely without harm to workers, equipment or the deep sea environment. The remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV), is a unique tool used in today in the quest for oil by companies who partake in deep sea drilling. Where underwater directional drilling is not possible, these ROVs can still bring up the important and much needed resources of oil and gas.
