Cleps Are A Great Way To Earn College Credit
There have been many news stories of students who cannot attend college due to financial hardship
, especially since the recession began in 2008. What many people do not know is that college enrollment hit an all-time high in October of 2008, during the worst month of the recession to date. The enrollment was driven by recession-induced record enrollment levels at community colleges. This bears witness to the fact that the tough get going when times are rough.
College enrollment, while salutary, still is not an option for many qualifying would-be students. The fact that many well-paying jobs are only open to college graduates seems to set up an impossible situation: they cannot attend college, but they cannot find work, either. How can they solve this problem? The easiest way to gain college credits is to take the College Level Examination Program exam or CLEP exam. The
CLEP was set up by the College Board in order to provide the opportunity for students who gained knowledge through non-collegiate activities to apply that knowledge towards gaining college credits.
The CLEP is very advantageous for students when compared to attending college for a semester. For example, a CLEP test costs $77, which is a fraction of most college tuition costs these days. A CLEP exam helps students save time by allowing them to gain credits, sometimes as much as twelve credits for a single CELP test, depending on the school and CLEP test in question. Another advantage is that the CLEP allows students to skip introductory courses by granting them the credits needed to take advanced courses in their chosen subject area, such as mathematics or biology.
CLEP exams are granted different credits by different colleges; this is because they recognize the CLEP differently depending on the test. According to the College Board, 2,900 colleges and universities recognize the validity of the CLEP. Students have to contact their college to discover their CLEP policy, since each school has a different one. CLEP exams provide an easy way for students to gain credits without wasting time or money learning something they already know. The good news is that CLEP credits can be applied to general education requirements at some colleges, which allows students who participated in the CLEP to bypass those courses.
Students who make the attempt to earn credits through the CLEP need to be aware that there is a minimum score that has to be met for each test in order to gain the credits. Each school has different minimum scores for the CLEP, which is another reason why it is good to maintain contact with the school's official responsible for CLEP policy. If used correctly, this program will help the student gain the credits they need to bypass unwanted courses or even graduate early. The great thing about the program is the freedom it allows the smart and studious to legitimately get ahead without dealing with all of the usual hurdles.
