Clothing Options For Camping

When exploring the countryside, it's always important to keep comfort and climate in mind when deciding what to wear

. At Outdoor World Direct we're aware of how important good outdoor equipment is. We have the expertise and the stock to help ensure you're prepared.

Suitable footwear is essential and you should choose the right footwear for your day out. High quality walking boots are the best choice for rough terrain; they protect your feet, keeping them warm and dry. The ankle support and grip provided by moulded soles help keep your footing sure and steady. Over less rough terrain, sturdy walking shoes can be a good alternative to boots. They are lighter and a good pair will still keep you dry and provide grip.

Now that you've ensured your feet are safe, what's next? A waterproof jacket is essential. This should have a hood and refinements, such as taped seams and adjustable cuffs, can help a jacket do a better job. An inexpensive lightweight jacket would do, but if you regularly spend lots of your leisure time walking, you'll soon learn that a good quality waterproof, windproof jacket, preferably made of 'breathable' material, is invaluable. It's also always worth considering the purchase of some waterproof gaiters or waterproof overtrousers for very wet weather.

The simple way to ensure you can keep cool or warm yourself when you're out and about is to use layers. A few thin layers of clothing provide far better insulation against the cold than a thick jumper, with the advantage that they can be removed or added as required.

The best option for the 'base layer', next to your skin, is to use a modern, quick drying, synthetic material capable of 'wicking' moisture away from your skin. Cotton should be avoided as it absorbs moisture and will soon make you feel clammy. Mid-layers provide insulation between the base layer and jacket. Material with an open weave is best suited to this job, and fleece tops designed especially for walking will provide the best combination of warmth, windprooofing and comfort.

Casual trousers are fine for everyday walking but can become uncomfortable during a full day out. Walking trousers made of lightweight material are very popular. They should be loose fitting and have a few handy pockets. Walking shorts of the same type are very comfortable in fine weather, but trousers provide better protection against brambles, nettles and ticks.

In winter, keeping your head and hands warm and dry is just as important as protecting your feet. A hat is essential in winter, but equally so when it's sunny. It's essential you protect yourself from over-exposure to the sun when you're out for the day.

Gloves are also important in winter. Keeping your hands warm is essential and being able to move your arms freely as you walk, rather than cramming them into your pockets to keep them warm, ensures good posture and circulation.

At Outdoor World Direct we stock a huge range of outdoor equipment and can provide everything you need to make your experience as enjoyable and safe as possible.
