Combining Massage And Exercise
There are many different reasons why you may want a massage
. However, exercise combined with a massage can be wonderful at relieving any stress that you feel.
One of the most relaxing things at the end of a stressful day can be a wonderful back massage from your partner. Many people face a lot of stresses during the day that cause their back muscles to tense up or even be in pain.
Students face the drudgery of carrying too many books on their back every day. Those that work in an office face uncomfortable chairs that encourage slouching and bad posture.
Athletes face strenuous physical demands every day. Mothers find themselves picking up and hauling around children all of the time.
Visiting a professional massage therapist is expensive and not very many people can afford to get a professional massage very often. Despite this, your partner can learn how to give an effective and professional back massage.
There are several things you will want to know if you are going to learn how to give a great back massage. The first thing you will need to know is the motion called 'raking.'
Raking is where you will spread your fingers apart and touch the back on each side of the spine with your fingertips. Your hands should start at the shoulders and move down the back.
Your inner fingers should right next to the spine, but not on it. It is important when you are giving a back massage that the person you are giving it to does not get used to the motion, but that you keep changing it up.
After a minute of raking, change your motion so one hand is moving up and the other is moving down at the same time. Another similar stroke is the 'fan.'
You should use massage oil when you are applying the fan stroke as this will help to relieve any friction between your fingers and the skin. The easiest position to perform this motion is by having the person you are massaging lie on his or her stomach.
Then, kneel with your knees on either side of the person. The fan is designed to target the trapezius and the latissiumus dorsi.
Your hands should be positioned with the fingers facing outward towards the sides of the person with your palms in the middle of the back. Then, you will move your hands in an upward, curved motion towards the shoulder blades and down to the outer edge of the body.
While you are giving a massage, you should never put a lot of pressure on the spine itself, but rather right next to the spine.
Of course, you probably already know the circular movement of the hands motion. In this motion, you keep your hands flat and start at the lower back.
Then, you will move your hands in an upward and counter clockwise motion. Your fingers should stay pointed out from the spine as you move up the back.
You can change directions and offset movement as needed, but this is a good motion to return to after trying various other things. Another thing that a professional massage therapist would do is a petrissage.
Petrissage is when the therapist kneads the back muscles to help smooth out knots and kinks due to tension. In order to target these knots and kinks you must work with a smaller area than you have been previously.
To target a smaller area, you must use the tips of your fingers and thumbs. Petrissage is pretty basic as you simply grab the muscle that is tense and squeeze.
Feel and move around doing this until you have loosened all of the tension in the back. If you use oil the skin will not feel like it is being tugged and pinched nearly as much.
When you are finished you will know whether or not you have done a good job by whether the person is relaxed or not. Hopefully, they will also be experiencing better circulation, blood flow, nutrient delivery, and removal of toxins as well.
A massage can feel particularly good after working out. By working out first, you will enjoy the benefits of exercise such as stronger muscles, more endurance, better sleep, and more energy.
One of the most convenient and safest forms of exercise is working out on a home elliptical. The elliptical allows you to enjoy all of the benefits of running without the pain that can result in your joints from the constants bouncing up and down.
As you work out on your home elliptical and then receive a back massage, you will reach one of your highest levels of relaxation. Exercise and massage work very effectively together.
