Commercial Automatic Hands Free Water Saver Faucets

One of the more common types of faucets is the air metering system

. This technology has been around from some time now, and it consists of a light touch button control that activates the flow of water when the control is tapped.

The air metering system regulates the amount of water that is then distributed to the user. The air metering control actually times a controlled burst of water that last for 10 seconds before automatically shutting off.

This type of faucet is not only efficient and cost effective to install, but it is ADA compliant. Its ease of use and its self regulating mechanism make this type of hand washing system a good choice for a accessible restroom with low to high traffic. Superior build also makes the fixture vandal resistant in damage prone areas and high volume user applications.

In many cases, now, however, hygiene is ranked in equal importance to resource management efficiency. In many service and hospitality oriented businesses, an increasing preference is being shown for commercial automatic hands free water saver faucets that require no controls to be touched at any point in time.

These fixtures either use standard IR sensors, or a new type of sensing technology known as capacitance sensing. A brief description of both follows.

IR sensors are basically small windows installed in a fixture that activate the flow of water when the user places his or her hands in the path of the infrared beam. This technology has been used for many years now, and it has been rated as highly energy efficient, resource management conscience and ultra hygienic.

The only drawback to commercial water saver faucets with IR sensor windows lies in their vulnerability to deliberate vandalism. People can, and sometimes deliberately do, break out the infrared sensor window. When this type of malicious damage is inflicted on the fixture, it is rendered useless and subject to replacement.

This is not to say that fixtures operated by IR sensors should not be used. On the contrary, they are often the best choice for office buildings, maximum security installations, churches, and low traffic restrooms in areas where vandalism is minimal or not present at all.

Along the same lines, though, commercial automatic hands free water saver faucets installed in high traffic or vandal prone areas are better protected against damage when they are designed with sensing technology that is internally concealed within, and protected by, the faucet housing itself.

This new technology is known as capacitance technology. The name is derived from the root word "capacity," which in this case refers to the immediate area around the fixture spout. Internal sensing mechanisms generate an omni directional field which hand movement triggers and activates.

While these commercial automatic hands free water saver faucets work much like those controlled by traditional IR sensors, the key differences here lie in completely internal, concealed, and therefore vandal resistant sensing mechanism.

It can also be argued that the omni directional filed generated by capacitance sensing is also more reliable than that of IR windows because it is activated on the first detection of hand movement and is therefore easier for users to operate.
