Common Spill Control Problems Facing Small And Medium Sized Businesses

Although large businesses and industries are fully aware of the legal obligation to ensure that they have plenty of appropriate spill kits and spill control solutions in place, it is often the case that smaller businesses and even medium sized businesses struggle to comply with the health and safety regulations. The reason for this is threefold, including cost, space, and a misunderstanding in many cases of how spill kits function in relation to the various risks which may be present on site.

Many of the typically available industrial spill control solutions which are available on the market are fairly substantial in size. Inevitably they are also often fairly expensive, and for a small business that may be operating from a relatively small space, this poses a very real problem. It may be that the small business has identified three or four different types of risk, including oil, water, chemicals, and bodily fluids. The proportion of risk for each category may be either fairly small or fairly significant, but what is important is the fact that all four categories have been identified by the business.

But often this then means the business is obliged to purchase four different types of spill kits, one for each of the types of risk which have been identified. Because many of the spill control solutions on the market are large, bulky, expensive and often designed for medium-sized to large sized industries, businesses or companies, this places small businesses in a difficult position.

Often the cost of having to purchase three or four large industrial standard spill kits is prohibitive, and may even result in funds being dedicated to spill control rather than being able to tackle other aspects of safety which may well be just as important.

Space is also likely to be a problem in many small businesses, and it has been known for small businesses to dedicate key areas to housing spill control solutions where they would have preferred to include additional storage for products, computer or office equipment, or even items such as water coolers which would provide employees with a timesaving and convenient means of remaining refreshed throughout the day.

These issues may not seem terribly significant to anyone working within a large business, but for those who may be operating in small offices or small buildings, they can often make a very great deal of difference to everyday working life, and even to the overall profit and efficiency of the business.

Until fairly recently there was little choice regarding the spill kits which businesses could purchase, with most of them either being inadequate, or far too large and expensive. Many small businesses also ran into the problem that once a spill control solution had been broken open and partially used, it was often necessary to discard the entire kit and replace the whole spill kit with a new one. There were no partial refills available, and this meant that businesses were often having to think twice before using a spill control solution in order to try to save money.

The good news is that today there is much more choice available, and for any small business which has been facing the problem of cost, space or convenience then it is important to look around, specifically for those spill kits which may be either small in size, and which also offer the opportunity to be topped up by refillable products as and when necessary.

Identifying accurately what type of spill kits are necessary, and where the spill kits should be sited in order to be near the possible risk factors is only one aspect of getting spill control right. There is now more choice available, and for small businesses this increase in choice could not only improve safety, but also improve cost, space and convenience.
