Comparing Electric Lawn Mowers with Gas-powered Mowers

Electric lawn mowers have been around for some time now, but why aren't they as common as the old gas-powered mowers? It is the same idea when people are car shopping. People tend to agree that electric or hybrid cars are a better eco-friendly choice and in the end, will surely save you money through low maintenance and not having to buy gas but still, the majority of us will end up buying a gas or diesel vehicle.

So what are the benefits of an electric lawn mower over the alternative gas mower? Well for one thing, you can save time and money by buying an electric mower. There are no spark plugs, or carburetors, or filters to clean or replace, when you choose electric lawn mowers. You also do not have to store gas on your property, which are both a safety hazard and an additional cost when operating a gas mower. For the eco-conscious person, an electric mower has no emissions and will cost pennies to operate. Both work well for small plots of land that are kept reasonably clean and mowed often.

The downfall of an electric lawn mower is when the surface of your lawn stretches more than 150ft from your outlet - you will not be able to reach that far with a plugged-in mower. Also, if your lawn is not well kept and regularly maintained, an electric mower has a tough time cutting thick and tall grass and effectively slicing through things like wet leaves or branches, which are less of a problem for gas mowers. Therefore, performance is lacking in comparison to the more powerful gas-powered mowers. You also have to consider the fact that a cord will be constantly trailing behind you with an electric mower. This can pose a safety hazard both as something to trip on and possibly an electrical hazard if the cord is cut or damaged.

Overall, your choice will depend largely on your personality as a consumer. If you have a small lawn, there are many benefits to choosing an electric mower, however anything over half an acre, would be better maintained with its gas-powered counterpart.
