When significant modifications are made to the standard ProSLIC circuit, the designer must verify that the new circuit continues to meet all the standard audio specifications. If the circuit consumes or produces

additional power, a thermal scan of the PCB should be performed to verify that it has no new hot spots. Even if no harmful side effects are detected, it is necessary to verify that the design goals of 94.5 VPK ringing and 5 REN load have been met.

Audio Performance

PCM 4 audio scans were performed on the circuit to confirm that the audio performance was unaffected. Audio is not affected by the dc sense resistor scaling because ac is independently-sensed through the ac

sense paths.

Thermal Scans

Since every box has different air flow, a thermal scan with an infrared camera should be done over the temperature operating range of the application. The power alarm control of the ProSLIC does not actually measure the temperature of the devices it protects; it is meant as a protection for abnormal conditions on the input or output signals. A thermal scan can determine a baseline of functionality for a real system in a thermally-controlled environment. It is possible to rent an IR camera for this purpose.

Ringing Performance

Ringing has been shown to perform well under 5-REN loading. The ac portion of the ringing produced after this modification is the same ac portion of the ringing produced before. Because the dc power is not absorbed by ringers, the ringing power delivered to the load is the same. However, the peak voltage provided to the load is increased by the value of the dc offset. It is possible to increase the ac ringing voltage from 65 to 100 Vrms. If this is done, more power will be dissipated on the transistors, and they must be scaled to accommodate this.
