Computer Chairs - Are Your Employees Sitting Comfortably?

Computers as we all know are becoming so ingrained into our society that it is almost impossible to imagine existence without them

. This has not been helped along by the fact that they are now becoming so cheap they are almost a commodity.

The role of the computer has also changed dramatically as well, and where they were once used to calculate complex mathematical equations or used for computer aided design and analysis. These days they are pivotal to most functions of business from accounting to stock management and beyond.

Of course this has led to many workers in business adopting very sedentary roles, and for the most part being hunched over a keyboard for a majority of the working day. An outcome of which is a major rise in the numbers of employees who suffer from repetitive strain injuries (RSI) and worst still, backache.

Back ache is by far and away the most common problem an employee faces when they sit in front of their system for a long durations of time. And, quite often seating is inadequate for the purpose as many businesses simply don't factor in that employees need (and they should supply) proper adjustable computer chairs. The net effect of this is that more people than necessary end up with back disorders and need to take time out of work to recuperate which actually costs business many millions each year.

The key here is proper seating education for employees, and for employers to become more aware of their responsibilities from a health and safety perspective.

Improper seating is bad enough for the fitter employees on your workforce, but if any already suffer from back pain or a past injury perhaps, then all the more reason to ensure there seating is adequate from both a posture and spinal support perspective.

The best option for this group of employees would probably be an ergonomic computer chair. Ergonomic computer chairs offer more than the standard adjustments and support of a typical computer chair and are specially designed to provide excellent levels of back support, thereby ensuring that users with sensitive backs are able to sit at a computer for longer periods without any form of discomfort or without further aggravating an existing injury.

Typically any computer chair should as a bare minimum be height adjustable and have adjustable lumbar support. Where a chair has armrests you need to be able to position the chair at your desk so that the armrests do not cause you to lean forward unduly, as this puts considerable strain on the back and lower lumbar region.

If your workspace is "spread" then you need a computer chair that swivels so you do not need to constantly twist as this could lead to further strains and in particular neck injuries. The chair should be a sensible size for your frame so you are adequately supported on the one hand, but are not being squeezed on the other.

Fortunately computer chairs and ergonomic computer chairs are not that expensive when you take into account how long they generally last. And if you work this back to a cost per year basis, investing in quality computer chairs or office chairs will pay dividends in more productive employees and less absenteeism due to sick days.
