Computer Monitors: Performance Measurements
Even though LCD computer monitors are widely preferred over CRTs
, their basic function remains the same. The most commonly used variant of LCD monitors which is the TFT has not yet managed to completely replace the use of CRTs as was predicted some years back by some experts. CRT monitors are still in use and are still being manufactured because some people prefer them over LCD ones. This can be attributed to the fact that the overall cost associated with the production of LCD monitors is relatively high compared to that of CRTs. This makes the LCD monitors to be expensive when finished. LCD monitors consume less power and less space and are generally light in weight making them to offer easy mobility. Perhaps these are the reasons why LCD monitors are seen as an improvement to the CRTs.
As you know today there are a number of different companies involved with the manufacturing of computer monitors, it is very important for any person intending to purchase one to know how to measure their performance. Currently people just dont buy computers for the sake of data processing. The uses of computer have increased; in fact there are people who buy computers strictly for entertainment. This is because they want something multi-purpose which they can use to watch movies, play games, play music and watch online programs. With such uses in mind people have become choosy of computer monitors with most people going for the ones with stylish designs. The following parameters can be used to measure the performance of computer monitors.
Aspect ratios this is simply the ratio measurement of the vertical length to the horizontal one. They are normally expressed by two numbers with a colon in between. The numbers are two because the ratio only considers the width and the height no matter how big the screen is. In most cases they are used for pixel dimensions and are expressed as x to y. computer monitors are known to have different aspect ratio and the most known include 16:10, 5:4 and 4:3.
Display resolution this is the number of distinctly placed pixels in every displayable dimension and can simply be explained as the number of rows and columns that makes the display. Even though the use of the term only apply to displays which are of fixed pixel arrays such as LCDs and plasma panels, it can also be used in CRTs but is known to be controlled by various factors. Dot pitch in most cases is known to limit the maximum resolution of a display. Dot pitch is simply the in between distance of sub pixels.
Viewing angle this is the maximum angle at which viewing can take place. The images should be clear and not degraded when viewed from the provided maximum angle. The measurement of viewing angle is done in degrees.
Power consumption this is the amount of power that the monitor is able to consume within a given time. Power consumption is usually measured in watts.
There are other parameters that can be used to measure computer monitors performance apart from the explained ones and they include luminance, contrast, viewable image size, response time and the refresh rate among others.
