Computers can help generate higher sales and profits for businesses via a company website. Many businesses now operate online and around the clock to allow customers from around the world to shop for their products and services. The newest miniature desktop computers are compact and energy-efficient, and while they are made to handle mostly basic business functions, they boast some surprising power and features. On the low end in today's use, computers are used by the small business for most accounting, communications and marketing applications. Computers have allowed, through the internet, business to leave traditional warehouses and headquarters and the actual store front has moved to the internet allowing international commerce rather than the local customer base of a physical store front. Companies first began to work with computer systems at the beginning of the 1960s. These systems were installed at computer centers. The operating costs of such a computer centre were so high that the systems had to run day and night to be profitable. With the development of data ommunications equipment, it was no longer necessary to install peripheral devices in computer centre locations.
