Confidence inspiring Callaway RAZR X irons
The RAZR X irons is Callaway's new flagship. Introduced for the 2011' season, the leader in technology vowed to provide an iron to the masses that would deliver in distance and forgiveness with a wide-sole, with retaining playability and turf interaction of a thin-sole. Team Callaway made this monumental task look easy.
The RAZR X irons feature Callaway's proprietary RAZR Technology, which shifts the centre of gravity lower and deeper in the clubhead, offering increased shot-making from more places on the course. Extensive player research has shown that golfers tend to strike the ball lower on the clubface and these irons are designed for optimal performance on such shots. The RAZR X irons also contain Callaway's Variable Face Thickness Power System, with a fully integrated clubface/undercut cavity system that enables the Company's engineers to precisely position mass properties and design the face of each individual iron for maximum ball speeds on all shots.
Tighter Shots, Shorter Putts, Lower Scores through RAZR Technology. Get the power and forgiveness of a wide sole iron with the precision of a thin sole iron. Most irons today are designed to maximize one specific performance benefit Distance, Forgiveness or Feel while sacrificing all other critical areas needed to hit more greens. To consistently hit it close and shoot lower scores, golfers need to be able to make shots from all areas of the golf course. That's why RAZR Technology is such a breakthrough. This technology will lead the industry into the next generation of iron design by delivering the distance and forgiveness of a wide sole iron while retaining the playability and turf interaction advantages of a thin sole iron.
Appearance is an area that Callaway missed the boat and they were not even in the same ocean. The being a player's Razr X Forged should look like a players iron. The top line is very chunky and should have been either thinned out or rounded off instead of squared off to give a thinned appearance. My Idea Pro irons have a top line much closer to a blade and IMO is much better looking at address than the Razr. I don't mind it as much in the longer irons, but the shorter irons remind me of the top line on the Titleist AP2 short irons.
Distance is always important to clubmakers. Sadly they trumpet the same line to us year after year about how this latest and greatest model is, "....4 to 7 yards longer than last year's model...." In this case, such a claim is at least probable, and here's why. As hot as the X-24's were, Callaway has tweaked the circumference of the safe hitting zone on the face. This allows for that .."closer to the toe.." strike that 92% of all golfers are guilty of. This reduces the distance lost on those toed miss hits. So in essence, it actually raises the average of an average golfer's distance off of each club by 4-7 yards. Don't get me wrong here though. If you smack one of these in the real sweet spot...and not just the safe hitting zone...you will see the real distance potential these clubs have. Besides the "toe-forgiveness factor" these clubs also have that fluted attachment to the rear of the cavity. That helps lower the center of gravity and add to the easy launch factor.
"In designing the RAZR X Tour and RAZR X Forged irons, we incorporated feedback from accomplished golfers and even Tour Professionals like Phil Mickelson," Hocknell who is one of the designers of Callaway. "The RAZR X Tour irons are designed for low-to-mid handicap players in search of the next-generation of playability and workability. The RAZR X Forged irons are truly Tour-inspired and utilize our Triple Net Forging process for a superior feel and look. They have the same high-performance grooves found in the winning irons at the 2010 Masters and U.S. Open."
As oversized irons go, the Callaway RAZR X irons were a nice size and the top line was confidence inspiring without being too thick. They were also very forgiving to hit with a lovely feel and sound and the uniflex steel shaft helped deliver a powerful strike. They look like the classic irons of the X series of the past but the offset seems more subtle and the styling a little sharper, so if you have the wherewithal, then this is a set to consider for mid handicappers.
