Consider Turning Candle Making Into a Business
Consider Turning Candle Making Into a Business
For many years I had been making candles in my home. They were mostly for myself and my home, but occasionally I'd give them as gifts to friends and family. I had given a bit of thought, a few times over the years, to perhaps turning my hobby into a business. However, it took me a few years to do so. I had a full time job at the time, and was not sure if I wanted to risk it out there in the business world on my own. But the more time I spent with the candles, the more time I wanted to spend. A few friends began to "place their orders" with me, for custom made candles, and that was when I decided I would forge ahead, and start my own business.
Since it had been my hobby for so many years, I really did have everything I needed to turn it into a full time career. I had a studio space in the form of a guest house in the back yard, so making candles all day would not upset the rhythm of my living space. I had supplies, candle making tools and equipment. So it just took a little planning as far as marketing and getting my work out there to be seen by more than just family and friends. And my work...I knew that in order to make it, I would have to really get to work, making as many candles as I could for a few weeks in order to have a back stock. The back stock is necessary, especially once you begin to promote yourself online or when you consider doing the arts fairs and festivals and the farmer's markets.
I had saved up a nest egg over the years, knowing that one day I would take the leap into starting my own business, so I loaded up on the various kinds of wax, dyes and fragrances and essential oils. And I got to work. One thing I realized is that when you start a business, any business, you really must love what you're doing and be willing to do it all day every day. This was fine for me, as working with candles, and listening to music all day in my beautiful studio was far better then most of the day jobs I have held. So once I had gotten a sufficient back stock, I took photos of my work. I was getting ready to create my own website as well as open accounts on the online arts and crafts sites.
I then began searching online for the fairs and markets that were within the range I was willing to travel. That range was quite small at first, but after time, I expanded the area I was willing to drive. I had just me, so I had to be certain that I was up to the loading and unloading of the candles, setting up my tent, and to talking to the many people who attend these fairs and markets. I was. In fact, it was a thrilling process all the way for me. There is something to be said about working for yourself. And of course there is much to be said about having a way of life, one in which you are truly happy to be a part of. I love candles, and the creative process, and interacting with the public. So for me, this has been an exciting and rewarding adventure. So...perhaps it is time for you? to turn what you love into what you do. You will not regret it, believe me!
