Considerations When Moving House

Moving home can be a very stressful time, whether youre moving to a different

, street, town, region or country; there is plenty to think about. Im sure we all remember the halcyon days of moving between student houses whilst at university when all it took was a friend with a car and a couple of hours to get all your stuff across the other side of town; the yearly ritual was sometimes quite fun. But if youve been in a place for a few years, youve undoubtedly accumulated an awful lot more than you used to have in your university days.

The best advice for moving house is to be organised and plan ahead of time. Packing will inevitably take longer than you think, and you will inevitably have more stuff than you can fit into your car. Thats why domestic removals companies are so able to stay afloat years of accumulated living arent going to fit in your car.

A key part of planning your packing is to plan your unpacking. If you leave it to the last minute, youre likely to stuff everything you can into any available box or storage container. However, if you start ahead of time, you can organise the boxes into different rooms (one for kitchen, one for living room etc.) and categories within it. Youre unlikely to unpack all of your stuff at the same time, so its worth doing in order of importance. And whatever you do, make sure you have a box for all the last minute additions youll still be using your cutlery until the last minute, and its the first thing youll need to use when you get to your new house, so have a box for essentials.

Starting early allows you to pack and discover you dont have enough boxes with more than an hour to spare, I would recommend starting at least a week before you move. As an added bonus, as you are likely to discover hidden deposits of detritus, if you give yourself enough time you will be able to separate waste into recyclable and non-recyclable. This will considerably lower the environmental impact of your move, as most people leaving it to the last minute simply do not have the time to consider where their waste will be going, and end up desperately stuffing as much rubbish into black plastic bags as they possibly can.

The key to moving is planning. If all your packing (other than the last essential box) is done before moving day, youre more likely to make it on time to hand over your keys and collect your new keys along with any other essential appointments you have on the final day.

Given adequate time, moving house need contain no more stress than that of getting used to a new place.
