Coping With Loneliness And Tragedy

At any point in our lives, we may encounter an unexpected tragedy that can catapult us into a severe cycle of loneliness

. No matter how happy or fulfilled you may be right now, there is always a chance that loneliness can intrude upon your bliss. Not to put such a negative spin on things, but tragic occurrences are very real possibilities in life, no matter how remote the probability or how unpleasant the prospect. It would therefore be helpful to learn as much as we can about how to cope with loneliness that often comes in the wake of a tragic event.

Tragedy can come in any shape or form, and it can involve anyone we share a close relationship with. Such events affect people in different ways, but loneliness is one constant for most people who go through a tragedy. After the loss of a loved one through illness or an accident, coping with loneliness becomes an all-important concern. For many survivors, the loss is simply too much to bear, and retreating into a solitary existence may seem preferable to trying to get by without the departed loved one.

Loneliness actually has some very real consequences for the sufferer in addition to the significant emotional toll. Studies have shown that people who are chronically lonely are at greater risk for developing a wide variety of diseases, particularly those that involve the immune system. Failure to cope with loneliness effectively can also result in insomnia, hypertension and severe depression, all of which are detrimental to human health.

By coming up with effective ways of coping with loneliness, it is possible to avoid the emotional and physical health risks that the condition so often brings. The most basic thing you can do is to try and socialize more. In the days immediately following your loss, it is only natural to seek solace in isolation. Give yourself enough time to grieve as this is an essential part of the healing process. However, take care that you don't slip into a cycle of depression from which there is no way out. If the loneliness drives you to self-destructive behavior or thoughts of suicide, it is advisable to seek professional counseling as a way of coping with loneliness.

When you feel up to it, you might want to try initiating contact with close friends or immediate family members. It would be best to limit these contacts to short, "no-pressure" visits, at least at first. Trying to jump right back into the swing of things might seem like a good idea, but you run the risk of burying your loneliness in a frenzy of social activity while neglecting important emotional issues that need to be addressed.

It might also help to focus on other people's problems rather than your own. You may find that taking your mind off things is an effective way to cope with loneliness. There is certainly no shortage of people who will benefit from your time and presence. By being there for others, you may just stumble upon one of the best ways of coping with loneliness.
