Loneliness In Women-common Signs And Symptoms
Loneliness in women is an increasingly common concern
, and yet there seems little that anyone can do about it. While there have been remarkable strides in technology in the area of communication, they have done little to dispel the growing sense of isolation and detachment that has made more and more people lonely in this day and age. In fact, some would go so far as to blame technology for the widespread depersonalization of society, a factor that may contribute to the increase in loneliness in woman as well as men.
Loneliness can have numerous significant effects on a woman, in terms of mental, emotional, and physical health, as well as how society perceives her. In a sense, women and loneliness are a particularly devastating mix, since women are so often seen as somehow being lesser than men. Despite the considerable strides society has taken with regard to gender equality, loneliness in women is generally considered much less acceptable than loneliness in men. Women who remain single are also often looked down upon and thought of as being lonely, even if they are single by choice. On the other hand, men in a similar situation are often admired and even envied by their peers.
It can be difficult to pick up the signs of loneliness in women, particularly in those that are in long term relationships. However, a long term relationship or a marriage isn't necessarily a "safe zone" for loneliness, and women in such a scenario can be just as lonely as you would expect an unhappy single woman to be. If a woman is subject to constant abuse from her partner-whether emotional or physical-she may begin to blame herself for her situation, turning her anger and resentment toward herself for being powerless against the abuse. In such women, loneliness becomes the overpowering emotion in a relationship in which she is essentially trapped.
In some women, loneliness can be manifested as a proclivity toward risky behavior or dangerous lifestyle choices. Loneliness in women can be consciously or subconsciously expressed in sexual promiscuousness, tolerance or seeming preference for abusive partners, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or other types of "socially unacceptable" behavior. All these factors can be tied in with depression, which in itself may last for a long time and result in a host of even more serious mental and emotional problems.
That being said, it is important to draw a distinction between women who are lonely and those who simply prefer to live a life of solitude and relative isolation. Society tends to be far too judgmental with regard to what people should and shouldn't do, and how they are supposed to live their lives. Although admittedly in the minority, there are many women who simply choose to be alone, preferring to draw satisfaction and fulfillment from their friends, careers or personal interests rather than companionship. In such women, loneliness might not be an issue at all, although many people around them would suspect them of being chronically lonely.
