Cosmetic Ear Surgery: About Otoplasty And Techniques Involved

Cosmetic ear surgery or Otoplasty is one of the most popular procedures for children

. The majority of patients that undergo the operation are between four and fourteen years old, though there are many adults who have opted for the procedure as well.

This operation can correct ears which are protruding, have deformed or large lobes, and those that appear cupped. These days a select number of physicians have developed treatments to create ears for individual who are missing part or all of these body parts as a result of injury or birth defect.

Children's ears are typically fully developed by age 4. Therefore no additional risks are associated with age. The procedure is generally performed in improve the appearance of the ears so that the child is able to live a normal life, free of ridicule and from strangers and peers.

During the initial consultation the surgeon will examine the structure and discuss possible options for correcting the issue. Even in cases where one organ needs be pinned back, surgery will most likely be recommended on both, to achieve the most natural appearance possible.

Otoplasty does not alter hearing capability. In a successful procedure, the organs will be proportionate to the shape and size of the head and face.

The operation is performed in a physicians office, hospital, or outpatient medical surgery center. Physicians typically suggest a general anesthesia for younger individuals and a local anesthetic with sedatives for adults and older children. In some cases, overnight stay may be appropriate. However, typically patients are able to return home within hours of the operation. Surgery generally lasts roughly two hours.

Techniques can vary. Factors which impact the choice in treatment options include the general anatomy, the extent of the cartilage, excessive skin, or the extent of deformity.

Two common techniques:

* After finding the most inconspicuous site, the surgeon makes the incision. Next, he or she will sculpt the exposed cartilage and reposition it close to the head in order to gain a more natural appearance. Non-removable stitches may be used to help maintain the positioning.

* This technique does not include the removal of cartilage. Non-removable stitches are used in maintaining the exact position.

Post operation, the head is wrapped in a series of thick bandages. These garments help to maintain the new position and helps to enhance the healing process. Patients will usually return to the physician's office within a few days to exchange the bandage and for general checkup purposes. Complete recovery time typically takes up to a month or more.

If you are interested in pursuing this type of surgery, it's important to find a board certified physician you can trust. Be sure to ask any questions you may have and be confident in your decision.
