You can once again do this yourself, or hire a professional to get the job done. If you decide to try your hand at this project you will need to rent a few tools to make it go easier and lay it properly. These are a knee kicker and a carpet stretcher. Granted, they do add to the cost of new carpet as a do it yourself project, but if you don't have any physical problems with crawling around on the floor for hours and using your knees more or less like hammers, it can save a nice chunk of change.

Putting in your own carpet is going to require removal of the old flooring, a thorough cleaning, possible removal of the baseboards, and installation of new tackless strips just to begin. The new pad is going to have to unrolled and cut, then taped together just inside of the tackless strips. So far, the job is pretty easy but you can still see how there can be such a difference in the cost of new carpet installation between do it yourself and professionally done. You can even do this part of the job yourself, then have the professional come in to complete it and still save a good portion of the fees should you choose.

If you decide to keep going on your own, you now need to lay the carpet on top of the pad. Trim it to fit, and stretch the edges over the tackless strips using the knee kicker all the way around the room. Now it is time to stretch the carpet so it will lay taught and smooth. You will need to use the carpet stretcher all the way around the edges for this job. Once you have completed that step, replace baseboards and you're finally done.

One thing to keep in mind when deciding how you are going to ease the cost of new carpet is if doing it yourself is really worth it. If you are going to have to pay to rent equipment, and then have a great deal of pain for days afterward, it is always best to simply hire a professional to come in and do it for you. They know exactly how to do it, and all you have to do is admire your new carpet when the job is complete. That's so much easier than doing it yourself.
