Could The Pain In Your Ankle Be Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) could be one reason patients experience pain or have received a pain diagnosis

. Many patients may think their pain will be a lifetime occurrence. Are you using a walker, cane, or other assistive device, or even in extreme cases, a wheelchair? You might be able to get around without that cane or walker, even if you have been diagnosed with RSD or its new name, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)?

For those wondering if CRPS or RSD is the cause of their symptoms, consider how it presents. Symptoms usually begin as RSD or CRPS with severe, burning pain at the site of the injury, where you are experiencing pain. You might also be experiencing muscle spasms, joint stiffness, restricted mobility, rapid hair and nail growth, and vasospasm.

Vasospasm is responsible for the color change in your skin during CRPS. As it begins to progress, RSD symptoms are increasingly worse as swelling spreads, hair growth diminishes, nails become cracked and brittle, osteoporosis becomes severe, joints thicken, and muscles atrophy from lack of use. CRPS could be triggered by an injury or bad fall, or even an accident.

No test available for RSD

There is not currently a test available to diagnose RSD or CRPS, as it is diagnosed by the treating physician through observation of movement and close examination of symptoms. Improving function and movement through physical therapy is one important aspect of treating RSD, but many patients have experienced such atrophy that it is painful to attempt movement. Instead of even attempting the physical therapy exercises, the patient becomes scared of experiencing that kind of pain again, and learns other muscle movement patterns.

Kinesiophobia could be the real culprit in cases of RSD

Have you ever considered that you don't have CRPS or RSD? Consider a concept known as kinesiophobia, defined as an irrational fear of movement associated with anxiety related to an injury. It is entirely possible to retrain muscles to do the work they are meant to do and recover from this condition.

New York specialists were treating a woman, who, at the age of 50 was being plagued by foot and ankle pain after a fall. She was using a walker or cane to get around and was complaining of pain in her heel, ankle, and Achilles tendon. She was having difficulty doing physical therapy while she was in such pain. She was convinced that her pain would always be that intense, but while at the hospital she was treated with Ethyl Chloride spray at the site of the injury. The spray briefly made the area cold and numb, so she could attempt moving her ankle. She did, and the pain was gone.

In this case, kinesiophobia was mistaken for RSD and led to unnecessary, expensive and painful treatments; she had kinesiophobia, defined as an irrational or unreasonable fear of movement. This is an important factor when a patient is trying to overcome the effects of a painful injury.

New York, NY residents can get relief from muscle pain. Discover how you can find relief from your pain and make sure your RSD is not really a case of kinesiophobia.
