Courier Claims Processes
Damage happens during shipping, and no one has yet come up with a way to avoid that
. If you're shipping with a specialty courier that is focused on transporting fragile and valuable goods, there might be a good chance that they can move something without any damage. When using an old fashioned rush courier though, it's to be expected that packages get damaged from time to time. Everyone always happens that the package that gets damaged isn't going to be theirs, but when it is, it is important that you know what the correct process is so that you can begin filing an insurance claim on your damaged goods.
Once you've realized that something you were shipping has become damaged, you need to be careful to preserve everything related to the order. This includes your reference number, invoice, and any other paperwork that you received from the shipping company. It is also especially important that you get or keep the packaging that the item was shipped in, as almost every insurance company is going to want to verify that the damage was not caused by faulty packing on your part.
The next thing that you have to do is to contact the courier company immediately and notify them of the damage to the shipment. Sometimes they will be the ones notifying you, such as when a package is damaged in a traffic collision, but other times it will go the other way around, such as when your customer receives their package and realizes that their item is broken. Then you will have to contact the courier to begin filing a claim.
There are certain situations where you may also have to contact your own insurance company immediately after realizing that your shipment has sustained damage. All delivery companies carry courier insurance that will protect the value of the cargo that they are carrying, but in many cases this amount is less than that of your shipments. In these eventualities it is likely that the shipper will take out additional insurance on their own goods to cover the deficit left by the courier's policies. You might have to contact more than one party in order to figure out which claim to make, or if you have to make more than one in which way you have to structure your claims process. Be sure to meet any deadlines for information given to you by the courier, or your claim could be nullified.
