Cramlington & Wallsend In The North East Of England

This article concerns two towns in the North East of England; Cramlington, in Northumberland and Wallsend in North Tyneside.

The area is powered by industry in the town's north-west, which is home to pharmaceutical companies like Aesica, Dohme and Merck Sharp. In terms of retail, the Manor Walks is shopping centre, constructed in the nineteen seventies and expanded ever since. Here there are a variety of retail outlets and shops including supermarkets, clothes and hardware shops.

There is a leisure centre in the town centre which opened in 1977. It has a pool, indoor footall pitches, bowling green, tennis courts and badminton courts as well as a climbing wal. There is also a gym, sauna and bar.

In the North of Cramlington there is Plessey Woods Country Park which is probably the biggest attraction in the area, located on the River Blythe. It's proving a popular place to live with a railway station serving Newcastle-upon-Tyne and an extensive bus services. It's also located between the A1 and A19 roads for access to the rest of the country. There is even a good network of cycle paths to Blythe and Bedlington.

Wallsend is probably best-known for its shipbuilding, with a litany of great ships having been turned out by companies based there. This includes the RMS Carpathia which rescued some survivors from the infamous Titanic in 1912. HMS SHieffield and Victorious were also built in Wallsend. The area also contined some coal mines including the Wallsend Colliery which was operable between the eighteenth and twentieth century.

The are has benefited from development since the end of the second world war, including the local shopping centre which is home to a number of retail outlets as well as eating and drinking establishments. North of the High Street is Wallsend Green, an area which is considered very attractive. Behind this there is Wallsend Park, with redevelopment planned for this area.

To the north of Wallsend is High Farm and Hardian Lodge. Wallsend Burn is a stream that runs though north-west to south-east, flowing into the River Tyne. East of the Burn is Holy Cross where the ruins of a medieval church can be found, as well as Rosehilll and Howdon.

The area benefits from being home to the Wallsend Boys Club, a football team which has produced famous players including Alan Shearer, Lee Clark and Michael Carrick. It's also the hometown of Police-frontman Sting.
