Create A Whole New You
When we get caught up in all of the necessities and obligations that life has to
offer--working enough to support ourselves and our families financially, meeting the demands of education, and looking after our children, among other things--we tend to lose ourselves in the tumult. I know it has happened to me, but what can you do if you feel the same way?
Unfortunately, many people try to make quick, drastic changes that we often jokingly refer to as part of a "mid-life crisis." In a rush to once again become a distinct individual that knows him or herself, some people pull away from family and friends, even going so far as to abandon spouse or children. This is not the way to create a new you. You don't want to leave pain and heartache in the wake of your self-discovery.
Instead, see this stage of your life as an opportunity for your whole family grow together as you grow individually. Talk to your family to arrange some alone time for yourself every day. I say that you should consult with them so that they know not to disturb you.
Use this time wisely. Start on that new novel that you haven't had time to read or designate it for concentrated relaxation in the form of a massage, manicure, yoga, or meditation. It doesn't really matter what you do, as long as it is something that leaves you feeling renewed, refreshed, and ready to take on your responsibilities again.
Do what you have always wanted to do (within reason, of course)! After having had four children, my friend Carol longed to have a tummy tuck. After discussing it with her spouse and saving funds for several months, she had the surgery. She felt so much more confident, it was almost as if she had been reborn.
Similarly, another friend had long been yearning for a rhinoplasty procedure. She felt that her nose marred an otherwise lovely face, so when she was trying to reinvent herself, contacting a plastic surgeon specializing in rhinoplasty was her first step.
Even if you aren't considering cosmetic procedures, you can still leap at opportunities to do what you've always wanted to. Is there a language you want to learn? A skill you want to develop? An adventure you've always wanted to go for? Make it happen! This may require advanced planning, but knowing that you are going to make your life more fulfilling can give you a boost of happiness you might not have otherwise.
