Creating A Business: Marketing Vs. Advertising - The Critical Difference

Do you know the one critical factor that will determine whether you succeed or fail

in creating a business? It is one of the most misunderstood and overlooked aspects of business development that you absolutely must educate yourself about if you want to be successful.

The most critical factor in determining business success is understanding the difference between marketing and advertising. Make sure that while you are in the process of creating a business, that you take the time to educate yourself. Find out the difference between the two before you expend a lot of misguided resources developing your company.

First, let me ask you, what do you think of when you hear the word marketing? For most people, I think the basic answer would be money, or getting money. Most of us tend to believe that marketing focuses upon the way you promote your business to get money. That is true, is it not? Marketing is about promoting a business to get money, right? In fact, that is completely inaccurate.

What I am about to explain to you may completely change your approach to creating a business model. The idea of promoting your business to get money has more to do with advertising, although only partially.

Advertising, whether it is in the form of pay per click ads, ad banners, or offline methods like billboards or TV commercials, is the means by which a company generates publicity for the purpose of making sales. That is the critical difference. The purpose of advertising is making sales. The purpose of marketing, however, is something entirely different.

Consider the following concept carefully, because it is critical to your success in creating a business model that is thoroughly effective. True marketing is the art of creating meaningful relationships.

Marketing has more to do with building relationships than it has to do with making sales. It is the process by which you create meaningful exchanges among people which result in sales.

Did you catch the distinction? Effective marketing results in sales, but the purpose of marketing is not sales. Sales are simply your reward for effective marketing. Remember that important fact. Write it down, memorize it, and apply it while you are creating a business. Marketing is not about money, making sales, or completing transactions, but it is centered around the following ideas: creating relationships, exchanging value, and building meaningful connections.

If you are creating a business and want to have effective marketing campaigns it is critical to thoroughly understand that concept. How do we build those connections and create those relationships? Through online tools such as articles, social media, websites, and search engines. These online platforms exist for the purpose of communicating and exchanging valuable content between people.

The extent to which your marketing campaigns endeavor to build strong and lasting relationships will directly decide the long-term sustainability of your business. The marketing paradigm that you have, and your ability to effectively utilize the online tools available, will ultimately determine either your success or failure in creating a business that has maximum long term impact.
