Lasting value? I know I want it

Lasting value? I know I want it. I know other people want it too. So whats the best way of creating such lasting value? If were going to do this right, wed better start off right. Do you remember the part of the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance when the author is talking about defining quality and quotes someone as saying Quality is just what you it to be? Hes right. And the same holds true for lasting value as well. Its just what you want it to be, when you are the person who is on the receiving end of that lasting quality. I might make what I think are the snazziest widgets on the market, but if snazzy isnt a priority for you, then Im going to have to look for something else for you to see lasting value in what I do.

So how will I know what the priorities are for you? First of all, Id better ask you some questions to see how you perceive lasting value. A direct question like what does lasting value represent for you is one possibility. Even if it turns out to be a little too direct, that shouldnt stop me from asking it. Ill probably need to get to know you a bit, find out about your business, like where its going and what your plans are.

However, I think that as a responsible provider of lasting value, I also need to help you towards lasting value as and when necessary. Note that I said help, not push. I think that the real pros in providing lasting value are often excellent business coaches as well. Theyre the people who ask you open, honest and above all non-threatening questions to help you find out what it is you really want and from that whats going to be of lasting value to you.

Youre the one that comes up with the answers. Theyre simply helping you to ask yourself the right questions. Sometimes this can be a major part of the whole process, because some people have never really considered what would represent lasting value to them. So the starting point can go that much further back. After weve gone through the process, and when I know what you really want, Ill put as much of it as possible into whatever product or service or relationship is concerned. In many cases, thats the easy part.
