How to cope up with Cross culture
Introduction:
The relationship between national culture & international management is an extremely complex one. Multinational companies have the great advantage of working in and with different cultures to make their products and services accessible to a far wider community. When multinationals develop into or with other countries there may be an assumption that because everyone within the company is working for the same destiny to maximize the profit, to fulfill the vision by achieving their goals. So they will automatically communicate, they will think & visualize things in the same way. Their cultural perception will not differ from each other .When multiple cultures begin working together, problems or difficulties arise. People are not skilled enough to compete with effective people. This can simply be because they've never had to deal with the issue before. People often think that language is a difficult barrier to breach. But that can't be extreme cause. When we know there may be language differences, we have a greater awareness of the potential for problems. People are reluctant to see what the other person is seeing that causes the difficulties.
The importance of Cultural Values for International Manager:
Managers in international business need to understand a variety of differences among nations. They should appreciate & respect others culture to get the things done They should create a cultural environment where no one feel ignorant & everyone nurture their talent. Managers who have worked in foreign locations acknowledge that understanding the culture in those locations is necessary if one is to manage & cope up with work effectively. Some emphasis on particular area can be taken seriously. Those are:
International Firms or MNCs can negotiate with various foreign constituencies.
Try to understand the cultural profile of the negotiators.
Managers need to understand the cultural factors that influence organizational strategies & objectives.
Manager in foreign locations often finds that the way employees behave are quite different from their expectation. In that situation being a manager he should find a solution to meet the goal by adopting various strategic alliances.
Cultural shock sometime affects employee's general ability to function well in foreign locations. Cultural understanding & adaptability of managers may bridge the gap.
Various functional aspects of organizations also differ from one country to another country such as finance, accounting, and marketing. Sometime they have conflict in terms of business ethics & corporate social responsibility. To overcome this issue, the organization must fit the functional aspects with the local culture yet continue to relate to the home culture.
Changing you to change others:
Life would certainly be a lot simpler if other people would just shape up and see things our way. We always wait for other person to change so that we will be all right. But this statement is no more going to work out. The new concept is that you have to be in the system to change the system. You can not borrow other's shoulder. To cope up with cross culture is similar to it. The reality is: the only person you can change is you. If you are in trouble and it feels as though people won't meet you halfway, unless you change and do something different, communication will continue to disintegrate. Even if you are at home, feeling damn hungry , staying with someone from another culture, waiting for the other person to do or change could mean a long wait. Its only you who can change & bring change in others.
Different perception in goal setting in cross cultural context:
An employee from very feminine society might see specific & difficult goals as encouraging competition & take it in a negative way.
An employee from collective society would likely see group goals as appropriate but would not react positively towards the individual goals
An employee from a society where people avoid uncertainty might find difficult goals stressful because of the fear that goals could not be achieved.
Solution through Motivation:
Motivation itself is a critical concept of management no matter where one is. Managers everywhere need to find ways to ensure that employees perform hard & convert into profit. In the era of Globalization, maximum input leads to the maximum output which gives the competitive edge to the firm. Managers can use the broad concepts of motivation theory such as needs, equity, expectancy, and so on as a base for understanding motivation cross culturally.
Conclusion: Culture is learned. It is not innate. Cross culture can be learned. People are socialized from childhood or by joining an organization to learn the rules & norms of that particular culture. It also means that when one goes to another culture, it is possible to learn the new culture. It will take time but it is not impossible. Culture provides orientation to people. It means that understanding a culture can help in determining how different group members might react in various situation which indirectly gives a root to cross cultural adjustment. Managers need to look after on diversity of differences which may embark diversification of thought which organization can use as USP. Avoiding avoidance is a good way to create good cultural ambience. Blame vs what can I do should be taken spontaneously. There should be balance between perception & projection which might mislead to conflict. Dealing with misunderstanding makes bonding between employees from global village. Last but not the least , to find a common ground portrays We all are one.
