Crossroads Of The World: A Guide To New York's Times Square
New York is a city synonymous with bright lights, skyscrapers, yellow taxis and just about every big city' attribute one can think of. New York City is the archetypal city one that sets the benchmark for conurbations the world over.
As America's most populous city by quite a distance, New York has a unique buzz that continues round-the-clock. Indeed, its city that never sleeps' moniker is entirely justified midnight and midday can usually only be distinguished by the level of daylight.
This is perhaps best exemplified by Times Square, the iconic intersection made famous in countless movies, TV programmes and other media outlets over the years. The bright neon-lit junction encapsulates the big-city buzz, and night-time is when the area really comes into its own, with throngs of theatre-goers, diners, commuters and onlookers savouring New York's epicentre.
Indeed, Times Square is often referred to as The Crossroads of the World', and visitors do indeed feel as though they are at the heart of something magical.
So what does Times Square actually offer visitors, or is it a place to simply stand and stare in wide-eyed wonder at? Well, both, actually. If you're on a short trip to the Big Apple, then Times Square certainly should be top of your list for places to visit even if you don't do anything when you get there. The buzz of traffic, skyscrapers and flashing lights is an amazing experience in itself.
However, if time is on your side, you could do a lot worse than find yourself a front-row seat in one of the many surrounding restaurants and watch the action unfold in front of your very eyes. If you really feel like cranking your NY experience up a notch, then the View Lounge at the Marriott Hotel offers unbridled views across the city from a 48th floor revolving restaurant.
Of course, nobody will visit New York for one intersection alone, regardless of how impressive it is. Luckily, Times Square is right in the middle of everything in Manhattan and if you want to experience a little urban park-life, then Central Park is a mere hop, skip and a jump away. The famous Greenwich Village, China Town and Tribeca are only a stone's throw away too.
Naturally, New York City hotels are always in great demand, so book well in advance to avoid disappointment. If you want to be right in the heart of the action, then a bed near Times Square could be what you're looking for.
