When considering the history of Argentina, many historians consider there to be four main parts

. This article is designed to explore the third period, which is made up of the independence wars, and early post-colonial days. This important time period lasted from about 1810-1880. So why were the 1800's in Argentina so important? After the Revolution of May 1810, different independent states were formed including the United Provinces of Rio de la Plata. From 1853-1861, the republic of Argentina was formed. Of course, you do not need to know these details before you attend Spanish school in Argentina, but they will certainly give you a better understanding of the country.

One important historical event for Latin America was the War of Independence. This was also a time where there was a lot of turnover as far as who held power. At the time, the standing viceroy was replaced with a junta. Men such as Manual Belgrano and Juan Jose Castelli waged war against the royalists. After the Junta, Triumvirates came into power. In fact, the Second Triumvirate put together the Assembly of the year X111 with the goal of writing a constitution. Later, the Supreme Dictator replaced the triumvirates. Clearly, there were many shifts in power during this time period.

The year 1824 is significant because that is when the Spanish empire was finally defeated. Finally, in about 1825, the UK acknowledged the independence of Argentina. They signed the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation. While Spain still didn't recognize Argentina's independence, at least this document was viewed as significant progress.

Another crucial part of Argentine history to understand when you learn Spanish in Buenos Aires is the Argentine Civil War. This was a war between Unitarians and federalists who disputed how the country should be organized. One political figure that dominated was Juan Miguel de Rosas who many considered a dictator. When Rosas refused to write a Constitution, Justo Jose de Urquiza overthrew him. At this time, the Argentine Constitution of 1853 was written. This constitution has stood the test of time and is still used today.

After the constitution, things began to improve economically. There was investment from out of the country as well as building of infrastructure like railways and ports. The president of the new "unified" country was Bertolome Mitre. Also industrial agriculture became popular, so there was more than just farming to support the local economy.

All of these historical tides created at atmosphere through which modern Argentina could be born. Between 1810- 1880, there were so many shifts in power. Yet, ultimately, they led to a constitution and a unified country. When you attend Spanish language school in Argentina, you will see a very different country today than you would have in the 19th century. Gaining an understanding of the country's history will give you even more to appreciate during your stay.
