Cures for Panic Attacks - From Motivation to Common Cure

Are there cures for panic attacks? First, that depends on whether coping is considered part of the definition. And what "coping" means. For most of us, that is probably a somewhat fuzzy spectrum.I. Coping and curing panic attacksOne can legitimately, for example, be proud of the ability to get through panic attacks. One learns that they are not heart attacks, that one is not about to die. One has come to accept them, that they will pass even though they are unwelcome. Coping means some success over very difficult challenges. Perhaps one has also learned to control them with a drug or homeopathic recipe taken at the last minute before the attack. Perhaps one has learned to concentrate on slowed breathing so as not to make the panic worse. Or one is new to panic or whatever. And for many, coping in such ways enables one to get by and live a somewhat normal life. Or at least be functional. A better way is either unknown or too costly or too scary or requires too much work. Of course there is a degree of "coping" with fear even among normal people who have never had a panic attack and never will. So in part the search for and application of cures for panic attacks becomes one of motivation.II. Motivation, learning, and advantageIf curing panic attacks were as easy as pushing a button, there would not be any need to discuss them or read this article. So they are an actual challenge. But what if they could be overcome given a little learning, material advantages, and adequate motivation? There are those who have overcome panic attacks to the extent that they have become normal. So what is the difference between those who suffer from panic attacks and those who are subsequently cured of them? Granted, some have more trials and troubles than others. And some have more advantages in the battle than others. One may then ask oneself if any have cured themselves of panic attack despite having more difficulties and fewer advantages than oneself. If the question cannot be answered, at least it implies that a cure for oneself may be possible if one has learned the right things and has sufficient material advantages and motivation.Causes of panic attack also has a bearing on cures. Causes can be physical/chemical as well as pertaining to the emotions. Some causes are rare or unusual, most have commonalities. Thus in most cases, a relatively few number of treatments can serve as cures.III. Some common curesCommon cures include a feeling of thankfulness. Often gratitude must be exercised as a discipline for the panic attack sufferer to benefit. Regular exercise if thankfulness is advisable. Thankfulness does have a wonderful way of deflating anxiety. The operative word is "feeling." Gratitude cannot be insincere or fleeting to reduce anxiety. One needs to think about the thing for which one is truly grateful. Meditate on it. Bask in it. Feel it. This need not take a long time at each session--maybe a couple of minutes or more, but the more the merrier.Another technique is to challenge false assumptions. For example, if one assumes one is vulnerable when that is unreasonable, identifying the assumption for what it is can be of help. Or if one assumes one cannot get along with the loss of a person or thing, coming to accept that as a false assumption empowers one against anxiety. In fact, one can empower oneself when challenging to do its worst the very thing that makes one afraid. This does not mean one throws oneself in harm's way, but it does mean facing fears head on in the mind rather than avoiding them. This need not be accomplished alone. One can do it in a controlled environment with a professional therapist. Or one can face one's fears incrementally by breaking them down into small steps or series of brief progressive battles. This is where self-discipline and encouragement from another person may be necessary.Granted, facing one's fears is hard. Accomplishing that task may require not only someone else's active help, but possibly other techniques such as changing to a less stressful job, better sleep and diet habits, regular physical exercise, getting relationships in order, the encouragement of hobbies, whatever it takes. And other methods are possible too.Getting as many advantages as you can just makes sense. Reinforce yourself. Keep growing in understanding. Keep trying until you win.
