Laser cutting uses a computer normally to very precisely calculate precision cutting. The material that is cut away will often be burned away by the heat of the laser or blown away by a jet of gas, it is generally though very efficient.

Other advantages over mechanical cutting include the easier work holding and less contamination of the work piece this is because there is no cutting edge or item that can sometimes otherwise contaminate the material it is cutting. There is also less chance of damaging, tearing or warping the material. Crucially laser cutting is also possible on materials that would be highly difficult or potentially even impossible to cut with mechanical or other more conventional means.

There are actually multiple types of laser cutting devices which use different 'lasing materials' and which are more suited to different situations. The three main types of lasers are CO2, ND and Nd-YAG. There are also variants of CO2 lasers including fast axial flow, slow axial flow, slab and transverse flow. CO2 lasers are pumped via a current that passes through the gas mix or through using radio frequency energy. This is more suited to boring and engraving. Nd/Nd-YAG meanwhile are more suited to high energy pulses. They can also both be used for welding.

Custom laser cutting then basically opens up this industrial process up to the masses and to smaller businesses and like forms of 3D printing allow anybody to start creating their own stencils and their own designs out of any material they wish. This can be used to create jewellery, ornaments, gifts, commercial items and more and really the only limit is your imagination. This way you can now go toe to toe with the larger businesses and make use of the same industrial cutting techniques for highly professional and precise items.
