There are actually multiple types of laser cutting devices which use different 'lasing materials' and which are more suited to different situations. The three main types of lasers are CO2, ND and Nd-YAG. There are also variants of CO2 lasers including fast axial flow, slow axial flow, slab and transverse flow. CO2 lasers are pumped via a current that passes through the gas mix or through using radio frequency energy. This is more suited to boring and engraving. Nd/Nd-YAG meanwhile are more suited to high energy pulses. They can also both be used for welding.


Custom laser cutting then basically opens up this industrial process up to the masses and to smaller businesses and like forms of 3D printing allow anybody to start creating their own stencils and their own designs out of any material they wish. This can be used to create jewellery, ornaments, gifts, commercial items and more and really the only limit is your imagination.
