This type of device has become very popular and it has been utilized in homes. How to make your own solar cells can be done through simple and easy steps using materials you can find at home or from your local hardware. This way you'll be able to save energy. The materials that you'll need to make your own solar cells are: one electric stove or hot plate, sheet metal shears, one micro-ammeter, tap water, one 2 liter plastic bottle or glass, safety goggles, two-three tbsp. of table salt, -foot square sheet of copper flashing, electric drill with sand paper and two alligator clip leads.


To start with, use the metal shears to cut the copper flashing in a square or rectangle to fit the size of electric burner. Make sure that the copper flashing is thoroughly cleaned. Then place it on the electric burner then turn it on and cook the flashing for 30 minutes to develop a thick layer of cupric oxide.

Allow the copper flashing to cool down and remove the cupric oxide that has formed. Scrub it under running water being extra careful not to damage the cuprous oxide that has been created. Then cut another piece of copper of the same size then attach both panels using the alligator clips to the inside of the jar.

Now connect the lead of the alligator which fastens the clean copper plate to the positive terminal of the meter. The negative should be connected to the cuprous oxide plate. And make a solution of salt and hot tap water that will barely cover the bottom of the plates. After that you can place your solar cell in the sun and be able to see the gauge move that reflects the current your device has created.
