Data Migration

Data Migration is the movement of legacy data to new media and technologies as the older ones are displaced

. Data Migration means what it sounds like it means -- sort of. It's not data that moves one from place to another. Data Migration is actually the translation of data from one format to another format or from one storage device to another storage device. This also necessarily requires someone or something to do the translating. Data doesn't just get up and walk to another format all by itself.

Data is stored on various media in files or databases, is generated and consumed by software applications which in turn support business processes. The need to transfer and convert data can be driven by multiple business requirements and the approach taken to the migration depends on those requirements. Four major migration categories are proposed on this basis.

Storage migration

Database migration

Application migration

Business process migration

Project versus Process

Basically Data migration is the process of importing data to a new system. This can involve entering the data manually, moving disk files from one folder (or computer) to another, database insert queries, developing custom software, or other methods.

Data migration typically has four phases:

Analysis of source data,

Extraction and transformation of data,

Validation and repair of data,

Use of data in the new program

Data Migration is the process of data transferring between storage types, formats, or computer systems. It is often required when organizations change computer systems or upgrade to new systems. Typically, data migration is performed by a set of customized programs or scripts that automatically transfer the data. Effectively migrating data requires extracting data from existing systems, mapping data from an old system to the new, loading the data into the new system, and then verifying the data in the new system to ensure it was accurately translated, is complete, and supports processes in the new system.

So why do many data migration projects fail?

Lack of methodology

Unrealistic scope

Improper understanding and use of tools

Inattention to data quality

Lack of experience2
