David Dhawan - King Of Comedy In Bollywood

David Dhawan is rightly called as the king of comedy in bollywood

. He is most known for directing a huge number of nonstop mass entertaining slapstick comedies, most often starring govinda, namely shola aur shabnam (1992), bol radha bol (1992), aankhen (1993), raja babu (1994), coolie no. 1 (1995), saajan chale saturate (1996), judwaa (1997), hero no. 1 (1997), deewana mastana (1997), bade miyan chhote miyan (1998), biwi no. 1 (1999), haseena maan jaayegi (1999), mujhse shaadi karogi (2004), maine pyaar kyun kiya (2005), partner (2007).

Born as rajinder Dhawan in jalandhar, punjab; David Dhawan is the younger brother of actor anil Dhawan.

Dhawan was hugely inspired by the manmohan desai school of filmmaking and hence decided to study at the film and television institute of india in pune.

Dhawan started his bollywood stint as an editor with the saawan kumar film saajan bina suhagan (1978). He then edited a dozen and a half more films including saath saath (1982), souten (1983), saaransh (1984), sultanat (1986), naam (1986).

In the year 1989 David Dhawan made his directorial debut with the action film taaqatwar (1989) starring sanjay dutt and govinda, but the film failed. Three more films released that year, but none could find success. All of them were actiondrama films.

The next year Dhawan directed two films of which the drama swarg (1990), starring megastar rajesh khanna, govinda and juhi chawla, worked decently.

In the year 1992, David Dhawan made a switch to comedy with the film shola aur shabnam (1992), starring govinda in the lead, which still had a lot of action like the previous Dhawan films. The film worked well and set Dhawan wheel rolling at the box office.

He followed it up with bol radha bol (1992) which starred rishi kapoor and juhi chawla both in dual role. This film too did well and Dhawan had a very good year as both his films were among the top hits of 1992.

In 1993 released aankhen (1993) which starred govinda (dual role) and chunky pandey. A fullon David Dhawan comedy which had the two guys playing slacker scum pranksters whose adventures create constant hilarious uproar throughout the film. Aankhen was the biggest hit of 1993 and was responsible for the revival of popular cinema. It is the biggest hit ever in David Dhawan career.

The following year, Dhawan directed three films of which raja babu (1994), starring govinda and karisma kapoor, worked very well. Anand milind music was a big hit.

Coolie no. 1 (1995), again starring govinda and karisma kapoor, proved to be a super hit at the boxoffice. It was the third highest grosser of the year. However, yaraana (1995), starring rishi kapoor and madhuri dixit, failed. Nor could the anil kapoorjuhi chawla starrer loafer (1996) perform well. But saajan chale sasural (1996), which starred govinda, karisma kapoor and tabu, was a success.

1997 was a very successful year for David Dhawan as four of his five films worked very well. Judwaa (1997), starring megastar salman khan in a dual role, was a huge hit. It was the first time that Dhawan had worked with salman khan.

Hero no. 1 (1997), which brought together the trio of Dhawan, govinda and karisma kapoor back, was a huge hit; and deewana mastana (1997), starring govinda and anil kapoor, as well. Mr. & mrs. Khiladi (1997) starring akshay kumar performed decently.

The next two years saw David Dhawan continue his success streak with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998) which starred Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan both in dual role. Dhawan united with Salman Khan on BIWI NO. 1 (1999) which was among the top grosser s of the year and Dhawan Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999) starring Govinda and Sanjay Dutt was another big hit.

This phase was a terrible period for David Dhawan as a total of nine films were released in this span including a few Salman Khan starters Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (2000), chal mere bhai (2000) and yeh hai jalwa (2002). Apart from a moderate success with jodi no. 1 (2001), which starred Govinda and sanjay dutt, no other film could really make a mark at the box office and many of them were received poorly, very poorly.

David dhawan collaborated with salman khan on three films mujhse shaadi karogi (2004), maine pyaar kyun kiya (2005) and partner (2007). All the three films worked very well especially mujhse shaadi karogi and partner. Though, almost all David dhawan films have been based on many south indian hollywood films; dhawan, however, was back in the reckoning. Shaadi no. 1 (2005) and do knot disturb (2009) failed, though.

David dhawan next directorial would be hook ya crook starring john abraham. While the sequel to partner is still at the writing stage. David dhawan is married to karuna dhawan.

They have two children rohit and varun. Rohit has been learning filmmaking in the us and has also assisted his father on maine pyaar kyun kiya (2005). He now plans to enter bollywood as a director, while his brother, varun, as an actor.
